Take the time and you'll find the Murray-Loddon basin is brimming with unexpected pleasures.

For instance, if you were travelling along the Loddon Valley Highway from Bendigo, would you think to take a left at the insignificant siding of Durham Ox and follow the road to Boort ? Perhaps not. And even if you did, would you then pop into the local IGA supermarket ? Unlikely. But you should. Because it's one of the places in Australia you can pick up Marilyn Lanyon's fabulous pickled green tomatoes. In packaging that should more rightly be gracing the shelves of The Vital Ingredient, these tremendous little flavour bombs are like a hybrid between a really good olive and your favourite relish.

'We've grown tomatoes here since 1978,' Marilyn Lanyon says. 'And I've been playing around with recipes most of that time'.

The inspiration for the Simply Tomatoes pickled green tomatoes came from 'a very dear Italian friend'. Lanyon played around until she had a product she liked, then went about putting the show on the road. 'I've had to suddenly learn about everything from marketing to designing the packaging,' she says.

The coolroom and storeroom are equally inventive : two shipping containers sunk in the home paddock. 'It keeps a constant temperature,' Lanyon explains. 'You don't have to use the refrigeration at all'.

If you long for the simple family holidays of childhood, this district is the place for it. Just remember to take an esky for all the goodies you'll want to bring home.

FAMILY TURNS ANGER INTO EXPORTS
