TASTE OF VICTORIA Magazine
Issue 34 – Summer 2005 / 2006
Outstanding packaging has been the key in Marilyn Lanyon’s drive to get her Simply Green Tomatoes antipasto from her farm at Boort, north central Victoria, to an international market. The product is now sold in 19 countries across Asia and Europe.
Regional Development Victoria’s First Step Exporter Project helped to finance the initial design and multi-lingual translation for the packaging. Marilyn worked with Melbourne designer Gareth Dotchin on the overall look of the package, and then with Bendigo Modern Press on the contents lists and recipe ideas, which had to be printed in 11 languages.
The result is a simple and elegant package of vacuum packed food in a folded cardboard packet that has won numerous awards; most recently the 2005 Colorpak Packaging Export Award at the Australian Packaging Awards, and the Vogue Entertaining and Travel Magazine Best New Product Award.
“I had in mind something noticeably different from a jar,” says Marilyn, “I wanted something that would really stand out on a shelf.”
“The vacuum pack is easier to handle than a jar – I can post small orders and samples from the local Australia Post post office to anywhere in Australia or around the world. They are flat, light and durable, and they are completely tamper-proof”.
This award-winning product has allowed Marilyn to fulfill her dream of keeping production local, while achieving international export success.
